ffect of Unintentionally Extruded Calcium Hydroxide aste Including Barium Sulfate as a Radiopaquing gent in Treatment of Teeth with Periapical esions: Report of a Case

I i rbed o s ( a bstract alcium hydroxide [Ca(OH) 2] has been widely used hortor long-term intracanal antibacterial dressi aterial after endodontic treatment. In general w sed in endodontics, Ca(OH) 2 paste is composed of t owder, a vehicle, and a radiopacifier. To provide iopacity, barium sulfate (BaSO 4) powder is usual dded to the paste. In this case report, BaSO 4:Ca(OH)2 owders (ratio 1:8) and distilled water were mixed pplied as dressing material after root canals of m ibular left canine and premolar teeth with periap esions. However, the prepared paste was unintenti lly extruded into the periapical lesion during app ion. The patient was seen 12 and 36 months lat hich point periapical healing was evaluated. At ime, it was observed that the periapical lesion isappeared, but white radiopaque spots were seen he place where calcium hydroxide remnants had o nally been present. The presented case report rev hat when Ca(OH) 2 paste that included BaSO 4 was pplied as an intracanal dressing and extruded thro he periapical lesion associated with pulpless teeth ad no detrimental effect. However, healing might onger when Ca(OH) 2 paste including BaSO4 is used, so eliberate overextension is not advocated. (J Endod 2008 4:888 – 891)
